We have three great groups this quarter:
- Make It Happen for Yolo County. Make It Happen for Yolo County (MIH) is an all-volunteer organization that provides household items to Transition Age Youth (TAY) with experience being homeless or in the foster care system who are moving into independent living situations. We additionally support the youth and their social workers with gift cards to be used for the youth on other household items needed for their homes.
- Yolo Food Bank. Yolo Food Bank's mission is to end hunger and malnutrition in Yolo County. Their goals are: to identify and respond to hunger needs; improve the health and well-being of food insecure residents by offering nutritious foods, including fresh produce and incorporating nutrition education into their programs; partner and collaborate with other agencies in the community to reach diverse populations in need; assure food safety; be a dependable provider; be efficient, cost effective and fiscally responsible; respect and honor all people.
- Explorit Science Center. Explorit Science Center's mission is to ignite and foster curiosity about science and nature through inquiry and discovery.

Make It Happen for Yolo County
Make it Happen for Yolo County is an all-volunteer organization serving Yolo County’s transition age youth (TAY), ages 18-24. Our clients are youth who have experienced homelessness, or are in foster care and are moving into independent living situations. Youth come to our five storage units which contain furniture donated from the community and all new household items (from mattresses to measuring spoons) and appliances. The items they choose fully furnish their apartment which is transformed from an empty living space to a comfortable home. Our clients struggle with a lack of resources and support and often feel forgotten, our program shows them their community cares.
Feedback from youth served in 2022 about what they found helpful about Make It Happen:
Since 2014, we have served over 170 of Yolo County’s TAY. We receive referrals from Yolo County’s transition age youth social workers, probation officers, and mental health social workers, as well as CASA, UC Davis’ Guardian Scholars Program and others. We plan to use the gift from 100 Women who Care to partially fund our storage units, purchase mattresses and restock household items to serve approximately 35 youth next year. Our unofficial motto is “If we say we are going to do it, we will.” We are proud to have kept our word.

Feedback from youth served in 2022 about what they found helpful about Make It Happen:
- “Also the bed because I was on the floor prior to receiving it”.
- “I find this program to be very helpful and accommodating overall. What I found to be very helpful to me was getting all the household furniture and kitchen items that I needed. Everyone was nice and kind… . I am happy that I don't have to be stressed about acquiring all this furniture….. Thank you so much for everything!”

Yolo Food Bank
Yolo Food Bank began more than fifty years ago as a volunteer-run gleaning program. Today, it partners with Feeding America, a national non-profit with a network of more than 200 food banks, and annually serves the nutritional needs of tens of thousands Yolo County residents. Working with a network of passionate volunteers, committed donors, grocers, retailers, farmers, processors and food distributors, Yolo Food Bank recovers, collects and stores more than eleven million pounds of food each year. It distributes that food each month through 130 distributions and more than 80 local food pantries, senior meal delivery programs, homeless and domestic violence shelters, migrant centers, college campuses, mental health facilities, recovery centers and more.
Yolo Food Bank increases food and nutrition security and helps create an equitable and sustainable local food system by connecting individuals and families to healthy, high-quality food and resources; collaborating with partners to deepen outreach and address food needs; and convening key players in the community to assess progress and plan collective actions.
This season, for our Yolo Gives & Gathers campaign we are raising $175,000 to:

Explorit Science Center
Current Programming Needs: Explorit Science Center has been providing hands-on science experiences to the Yolo County region for forty years. Through on-site and mobile programs, we stimulate wonder in audiences of all ages and enrich people’s lives through the joy of learning. Our mission is supported by generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Funds provided by 100+ Women Who Care Yolo County will support Explorit Science Center’s Classroom Adventure outreach programs that have historically served nearly 10,000 students annually in over 17 Northern California counties.
Teachers scheduling a Classroom Adventure can choose from three offerings:
Amazing Animals - Investigate the way animals survive and thrive with real animal specimens. See how adaptations help animals hide in plain sight and how young animals change as they grow. Meet Explorit’s resident insects and reptiles.
Earth’s Features - Uncover the Earth’s layers to discover the forces behind the phenomena of earthquakes and volcanoes. Design an earthquake-safe structure and then shift the tectonic plates. Explore rock, fossil, sand, and mineral samples for what they reveal about the history of the planet.
Simple Machines - Explore how forces and objects interact to make things move. Test different pulley systems, build with gears, and discover the simple machines hidden in everyday objects. Lift people off the ground with a lever or roll them across the floor with wheels.
Updating and refurbishing these programs is a top priority for Explorit Science Center as we recover and reconnect with students during this first, full post-COVID school year. 100+ Women Who Care Yolo County can be instrumental in ensuring that the students participating in Classroom Adventure programs have access to high-quality materials and real scientific specimens.
